Asher Roth presents a head turning graphic novel inspired video for “Last Man Standing” (which features Akon)

Yeeee! It’s been a long long long day today, and I really needed something to pick it up and make me smile. Asher Roth barreled in with his brand new video for his track “Last Man Standing” (off his upcoming sophomore album Is This Too Orange?), which features… Akon!

I’m excited about this for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that Akon does not start the song with his signature “Akon! Konvict Music!” How refreshing for him to step up as the chorus man, and just BE that. His contribution on this track is light, with some “oh’s” and a chorus, but that’s about it. Turns out, it works pretty well over this hard hitting beat. The beat here fits nicely with other things we’ve been hearing from Asher recently, like “Another One Down” and “G.R.I.N.D.” A nice combination of heavy piano and drums and fuzzy guitar sounds give this a feeling somewhere that lands nicely between indie rap and harder hip hop. It’s not pop hip hop, it’s not gangster rap. It’s… Asher. Definitely finding his personal style right now, and I’m FEELING it.

Add to that a visually exciting video. Done in gorgeously saturated colors , real Asher and Akon blend back and forth with graphic novel-esque book scenes. And since it’s graphic novel-esque, you know that means fight scenes, chases, and confrontations. Using the idea that he is battling his past enemies and demons, first he gets kinda beat up, but then he gathers his courage and takes them on, single handedly using only his words to knock them down. But that’s not the end for him, as he has to go head to head with his pixelated past self (ala Scott Pilgrim) to truly be the last man standing. Love it.
