Neon Hitch has been making a run at hip hop covers for the last couple months now, all of which I have greatly enjoyed. Part of that enjoyment is that she’s taking songs that I found somewhat abrasive previously (or just downright inane) and made them fresh and funky. First she flipped Wiz Khalifa‘s “On My Level” (completely changing the tempo and give it a raw anthemic quality), then Kreayshawn‘s “Gucci Gucci” (making it less nasally and more melodic), and now she’s covered Waka Flocka Flame‘s “No Hands” (which is awesome, since I find the original obnoxious at best). And she’s done it with yet another interesting music video, this time in reverse time and slutty pantyhose.
“No Hands” is a solid cover, though slightly less original to me as the other two. That may be because the beats seem to be really similar on all of three covers. Neon loves her gypsy drums, and clinking piano, and it’s a great rhythm that works well with her high range voice, but… when she uses it on every song, it stops being original. Even saying that though, I’ll still probably take her covers over the originals most of the time.
Check out Neon’s cover first, then the original below, and see if you agree.
